My Concierge MD measures body composition in our Beverly Hills office with a whole-body DEXA scan on a GE Lunar Prodigy Advanced, which separates fat, lean muscle and bone across your whole body. Dr. David Nazarian, a board-certified internal medicine physician, reviews the results with you and uses them to guide your plan.

Why weight and BMI aren’t enough
Two people with the same weight and BMI can carry very different amounts of fat and muscle. A scale can’t tell whether a change came from fat, muscle or water. Body composition testing shows what your weight is actually made of.
What we measure
- Body fat percentage, total and by region: arms, legs and trunk
- Visceral fat estimate, the fat around the organs most closely linked to diabetes and heart disease
- Lean mass, including the muscle in your arms and legs, used to spot age-related muscle loss
- Left-right balance, useful after injuries or for athletes
- Bone mineral content from the same scan
Who it helps
- Patients on a medical weight loss or GLP-1 program, to make sure the weight lost is mostly fat, not muscle
- Patients in our longevity program who want a baseline and to track muscle as they age
- Patients on hormone therapy, to see how body composition responds
- Athletes and active adults tracking a training program
What to expect
You lie on an open padded table for about 10 to 20 minutes while the scanner arm passes over you. There is no tunnel, no injection and a very low radiation dose. For the most consistent results, come at a similar time of day for each scan, well hydrated, without a large meal or hard workout beforehand, in clothing without metal.
How we use the results
Dr. Nazarian turns the numbers into specific targets: how much fat to lose, how much muscle to keep or build, protein intake and strength training. Repeat scans every 6 to 12 months on the same machine show real change. Pair it with VO2 max testing for fitness and advanced blood work for metabolic health; all results go on one timeline in our Continuous Longevity Intelligence program.
Frequently asked questions
Is DEXA more accurate than a smart scale?
Yes. Home scales estimate body fat from electrical resistance and shift with hydration. DEXA measures fat, muscle and bone directly by region.
How often should I repeat it?
Usually every 6 to 12 months during a weight loss or training program, or yearly for longevity tracking.
Is a body composition scan the same as a bone density test?
Same machine, different scan. If you also need a bone density reading, see our DEXA scan page; we can do both in one visit.
Is it covered by insurance?
Body composition scans for fitness, weight management or longevity are usually self-pay. Ask us for current pricing.
