What Causes Aging?
- Sun exposure: Excessive exposure to sunlight has been linked to numerous skin-related issues, including accelerated aging of the skin, known as photoaging. According to research, UV light is the cause of 90% of visible changes to the skin, such as age spots. Moreover, it has been found that excessive sun exposure can also increase one’s risk of developing skin cancer.
- Blue light: Approximately 10% of skin changes can be attributed to high-energy visible (HEV) and infrared light. HEV light, also known as blue light, originates from both the sun and electronic devices such as smartphones. Infrared light is invisible but can be felt as heat. It has been found that these forms of light do not increase one’s risk for skin cancer; however, their effects on collagen and skin elasticity cannot be discounted.
- Unhealthy diet: Several studies have suggested that diets high in sugar or refined carbohydrates may lead to premature aging, whereas those abundant in fruits and vegetables may help protect against such skin changes.
- Smoking: Smoking can have detrimental effects on the body due to the toxic compounds in nicotine that break down collagen and elastic fibers in the skin. This can lead to sagging, wrinkles, and a hollower facial appearance. In addition, smoking also shortens healthspan.
- Poor sleeping patterns: Recent studies have indicated a potential link between inadequate sleep and accelerated cellular aging.
- Stress: Under times of stress, the brain releases cortisol, a hormone responsible for eliciting the body’s fight or flight response. Unfortunately, this hormone can have deleterious effects on the skin, blocking two vital compounds responsible for toning and plumping: hyaluronan synthase and collagen.
- Alcohol consumption: Excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to dehydration, which can cause permanent damage to the skin, resulting in premature aging. Drinking too much can lead to heart disease as well.
- 8. Chemical exposure: The use of harmful chemicals, such as synthetic fragrances and sunscreens, can also lead to skin changes in the form of premature aging.
