MyConciergeMD | Thyroid Ultrasound

Ultrasound of the Thyroid

Our center is equipped with one of the most advanced ultrasounds available to scan the thyroid for anatomical abnormalities.

Ultrasound of the thyroid is used to obtain images of the gland that is located on both right and left side of the neck and is responsible for the production of thyroid hormone. An ultrasound of the thyroid is a simple, noninvasive exam that is quickly performed in our office as a screening tool to diagnose thyroid abnormalities or to further evaluate the thyroid gland of patients with thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

Thyroid Ultrasound Protocol

The thyroid is a small endocrine gland that helps regulate thyroid hormones that are distributed throughout the body via the blood stream. The thyroid also helps regulate heart rate, body temperature. Ultrasound gel is applied to the neck area where the thyroid gland lies. The ultrasound technician then surveys the thyroid gland and its lobes looking for changes within the thyroid gland such as texture, cysts, nodules, vascularity and more. Nodules or goiters can cause and be responsible for irregular function of the thyroid gland.

Why should I have a thyroid ultrasound performed?

Patients who are at a high risk of thyroid disease or have thyroid conditions such as hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidsm, or a goiter should have their thyroid screened through ultrasound to identify any abnormalities within the thyroid gland which may be responsible or need further testing. An ultrasound of the thyroid gland can be used as a follow up tool to monitor certain thyroid conditions and determine if certain conditions are worsening over time.

Benefits of Thyroid Ultrasound

Like many ultrasounds, a screening ultrasound of the thyroid uses sound waves which do not emit radiation. This procedure is performed quickly and findings are seen instantly to further aid the doctor in his treatment.
