Musculosketal Ultrasound

A diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound or msk ultrasound is used to obtain images of superficial structures such as tendons, ligaments and joints. A musculoskeletal sonography or musculoskeletal ultrasound can diagnose tears of ligaments and tendons as well as sprains. Ultrasound of the musculoskeletal structures is a safe and does not expose patients to radiation exposure.

Indications for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound:

Sprain or Torn Muscles

Sprain or Torn Ligaments
Ganglion Cysts
Tendinitis
Lipomas
Rotator Cuff in Shoulder
Fluid in the Joints
Hernias
Foreign Bodies

Why is a musculoskeletal ultrasound performed?

Patients who experience some type of injury or trauma anywhere on the body can have an ultrasound performed to visualize for any signs of tear within the muscles, ligaments or tendons. Joints that are swollen can be scanned for fluid collections within the joint space. Subcutaneous masses can also be easily scanned to differentiate their composition and help in their diagnosis.

Benefits of a musculoskeletal ultrasound

An ultrasound is a great alternative to an MRI for patients who are claustrophobic and are not able to lay down still in closed areas. Ultrasound produces optimal images of the muscles, tissues and ligaments that no other test can see or visualize. A musculoskeletal ultrasound is performed quickly and safely in the office.

Preparation for musculoskeletal ultrasound

No specific preparation is needed prior to performing this procedure. It is important to leave home any jewelry that may interfere with the location needed to be visualized.
